Having been a fan of stationery brand Oh Deer (and the artists they regularly work with) for a few years now, I was excited to try their art subscription box, Artful. Items I have bought from them in the past have been exceptionally high quality, so they had set the bar high from the beginning.
The Calligraphy box is my second box in the Artful series, and I had enormous fun with it. Arriving in a beautifully illustrated box, I received the following:
- 8 Tombow brush pens
- 5 Tombow markers
- HB pencil
- A4 drawing pad
- 4 blank cards with envelopes
- Artful magazine
The Artful ‘magazine’ is more like a book. Pages and pages of tutorials from artists offering the carefully photographed step-by-step process of their work. It makes learning to use the tools effortless, as you can easily follow their instruction, and go rogue once you gain enough confidence.
I dabbled in calligraphy when I was 11, so it was fairly nostalgic learning how to beautify my writing once again. The water-based brush pens were really fun to use! I was initially skeptical about how well the whole process would work on the paper provided, but they’d even thought about that and provided sensible watercolour paper (no soggy pages here!).
As well as calligraphy, there were tutorials for alternative ways you could use the pens, including this slightly abstract flower arrangement. It provided good practice for learning how to layer colour with the pens, and experiment with thick and thin lines, as well as shading.
A little extra you get with each subscription box is some digital tutorials that are emailed periodically throughout the quarter. Though I haven’t utilised these videos as well as I should, I love that Artful are encouraging you to pick up your tools and continue exploring the craft over several months, and have thought about the longevity of their product.
For £35, I think this subscription box is a steal. A starter lettering set is £52 on the Tombow website, yet what makes this box is Artful’s beautifully curated magazine that supports you with your new tools… plus, it all arrives in a pretty box!
My next Artful box is already on order, and I can’t wait to see what art medium I get to try next! Get your own on the Artful website (not sponsored, I’m just a little bit obsessed!)
