First Lines Friday: 7th August

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Please comment below or tag me in the post, so I can check it out!

As this week is Wanderlust, I’ve chosen an appropriately travel-themed book for the occasion…

Roger, aged seven, and no longer the youngest of the family, ran in zigzags, to and fro, across the steep field that sloped up from the lake to Holly Howe, the farm where they were staying for part of the summer holidays.

Curious?  Read on to find out which book this extract is from…

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

Goodreads | The Book Depository

To John, Susan, Titty and Roger, simply being allowed to use the boat, Swallow, to go camping on the island is adventure enough.  But they soon find themselves under attack from the fierce Amazon Pirates, Nancy and Peggy.  And so begins a summer of battled, alliances, exploration and discovery.

Have you read this book?  Have you ever chosen to read a book based purely on an extract, and if so, did it work out well?  Share your experiences!

Also, if you want to try First Lines Fridays yourself, comment your book teasers below, or just pingback if you write your own post, so I can check it out!
