I feel like a lot has happened since the last time I did one of these catch-up posts (back in August, I think). For starters, we had our second lockdown here in England. It lasted for most of November, but felt a bit weird as I was still going to work like usual this time. All these constant rule changes have been tiring to keep up with and implement at work, so I think I’m about ready for a nice, long, Christmas break. Roll on festive PJs, movies and puppy snuggles. Let’s crack on, I’ll put the kettle on…
If we were having coffee… I would say that I got my first tattoo this week! I’m beyond happy with it, and so glad that I’ve finally started my tattoo journey after all this time. The piece is of cherry blossom and leaves, leading down to a peony, and the whole design curves around the front of my thigh. I’m already planning my next one! I’ll show off some photos in a full post once it has healed a bit more (it’s still very sore, like a bad sun burn!).
If we were having coffee… I would say that I’ve been really into my YouTube lately! My current favourites are Pretty Pastel Please (highly recommend the Thriftmas videos), Sorted Food (we’ve just bought some of their cookbooks!), and Kimberly Toon. I think after a year of not being able to socialise and do normal things, watching other real people do fun things offers some much-needed escapism…
If we were having coffee… I would introduce you to Oscar! We have adopted Oscar from his previous owner, who was beginning to struggle having him around due to old age. She had started threatening having him put down, so we jumped in and agreed to look after him for a while. A ‘while’ has turned into a few months, and we’re really enjoying having him around. My sister’s dog lives with us too, so having three dogs in the house is a noisy, smelly nightmare, but when the alternative is the threat of having a 4-year-old pooch put down?! Err, I’m sure we’ll manage! Oscar is having his first groom ever tomorrow, so we’re excited to see what he looks like under that big, shaggy coat!
If we were having coffee… I would say that I listened to a really good audiobook recently. The Lake House by Kate Morton is about a family tragedy in the early 1900s that leaves behind an unsolved mystery. The story switches between the events and relationships of the past and the modern-day detective who is trying to solve the cold case. I thought the narrator (Caroline Lee) was a brilliant storyteller, and of course Kate Morton always writes a good book, so top marks all round.
If we were having coffee… I would say that I put up my Christmas tree mid-November because I definitely needed a small, sparkly boost. We’ve had to make it dog-proof this year, because Flynn would 100% sneak presents away and hide them (found him burying Oscar’s lead in the garden earlier – luckily he did a terrible job of it!).
If we were having coffee… I would say that I attended a British Library webinar recently about wellbeing during the pandemic, focusing on avoiding burnout. Burnout was described as having multiple commitments in challenging conditions, with not enough capacity or resources to cope with it. It offered some useful information about recognising your mental capacity, ensuring you take on only as much as you can sensibly cope with to avoid stress and to make time for relaxation. It suggested writing down a list of people you feel responsible to, and to see if you can make changes to have less on your (mental) plate. Top tips for recharging again: sleep, rest, meditation, laughter and distraction! I hope next time life gets frantic, that I will have some new techniques to restore balance!
If we were having coffee… I would say that I really enjoyed looking at my Spotify Wrapped 2020. My most listened to song this year was ‘Obey’ by Bring Me The Horizon and YUNGBLUD. You can watch the fun music video for the song here. My top genres were Metalcore, Rock, Scorecore (I had to Google what this even was!), Pop Rap and Trancecore. My most listened to podcast was Crime Junkie, followed by No Such Thing As A Fish, both of which I (obviously) recommend! I’m a big fan of infographics and statistics, can you tell?
What would you share if we were having coffee?
