If We Were Having Coffee…

The last time I did a If We Were Having Coffee… post, we were somewhere at the beginning of lockdown.  For me, as I was fortunate enough to continue working full-time at home, lockdown just became the new normal, and I was fully adjusted to the routine after just a couple of weeks.  Then, ALL CHANGE; now that the U.K. begins easing those strict measures put in place, it’s another period of change and adjusting to the new rules coming out every week.  The thing that has been helping is knowing that most people are confused and anxious too, so my discomfort through each new change isn’t something unique to me.  Even though the coronavirus is still affecting everyone right now, I don’t want to talk lockdown again (please, don’t make me do it), so here’s a bunch of other, much more interesting things I would looove to share over some coffee instead…

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that I fully support the Black Lives Matter movement.  I’ve been talking about it, I’ve been reading about it, I’ve been watching videos about it.  I’m white, so I don’t know what it feels like to be discriminated against because of the colour of my skin, but I am listening and learning and supporting.  I have three books lined up to read: Me and White Supremacy: How to Recognise Your Privilege, Combat Racism and Change the World by Layla F. Saad, Diversify: How to Challenge Inequality and Why We Should by June Sarpong, and Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo (because it’s nice to mix things up with a bit of fiction!).  I have also donated to Black Lives Matter UK; they list the ways they will spend the donations, and I support every one of them.  You can donate too right here.

If we were having coffee… I would show you a picture of our gorgeous new Cocker Spaniel, Flynn (see photo of him being squished by his sisters, he’s such a cuddle-pup!).  Neil and I have both recently made adjustments to our work schedules (outside of the lockdown madness) that have luckily allowed for us to care for this handsome fella.  We get to bring him home in just a few weeks, squeeeee!

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that I have played a bunch of new tabletop games recently.  I played Fallout Shelter for the first time last week, which I was a little skeptical about, because I feel like board games based off of video games can be hit-or-miss (X-COM was amazing, DOOM was so-so).  However, I was pleasantly surprised and ended up thoroughly enjoying the experience, particularly the themes (though I’m probably biased as a Fallout fan) and the light competitive elements.  Plus, it comes in a neat little tin!

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that we recently invested in a 3D printer.  We’re still learning the ins and outs of the tech, but we had to start with the obvious – printing stackable token trays for our board games (a clear priority, right?).  I’m still at that stage with it where I can sit and watch it print for ages, because I’m just absolutely mind-blown by the technology!  Our most recent project has been to print token holders for Quacks of Quedlinburg, as we always end up having to either stack the game pieces in piles on the table, or use mugs and empty GU glasses!  Don’t they look glorious?

If we were having coffee… I would tell you that I treated myself to some clothes from Joanie Clothing after reading a post by The Cornish Geek.  I bought the ‘cat-napping’ t-shirt, the lovely red swallows summer dress and the Avid Readers Club jumper.  Everything is soft and fits perfectly, definitely good value for money!

If we were having coffee…  I would say that I have been on a whole bunch of countryside walks recently.  I’m so, so lucky to be living somewhere fairly rural and scenic during this staying-at-home period.  I’m trying to go on a long walk every weekend to get the most out of our gorgeous coast – my poor brother is stuck in a houseshare in central London, so I’m definitely not going to take our location for granted.

If we were having coffee… I would say that I have been discovering some great music this year.  Then, I’d probably make you open Spotify and insist you add a whole bunch of tracks to your playlist.  I would suggest you started with Blessed Be by Spiritbox (warning: the video is a bit gory):

If we were having coffee… I would admit to still being obsessed with Animal Crossing.  Even more friends have started playing it, so there are brand new islands to explore and visitors to host.  I had been eagerly awaiting June’s wedding event for much of May, and have been religiously logging on every day so far to get as many pieces of the furniture I can!  You can catch a glimpse into my addiction with my Meet my Villagers and A Month on Hrothgar posts.

What would you be sharing over coffee this month?
